With several Nigerians on death row in Saudi Arabia and other middle east and Asian countries for drug offences, another Nigerian has been arrested for the same offence in India.
The latest suspect is reported to be a 40-year-old ex-footballer simply identified as Ikenna. Authorities said he was caught with 10 grams of crystal meth suspected to have been brought from Mumbai. He was reportedly on his way to a club to supply the drugs to waiting customers when he was apprehended. A raid was thereafter carried out in his house located in Kardampuri in Jyoti Nagar area of India where 18 grams of cocaine was reportedly found.
Police say Ikenna has confessed to being the third man in the cocaine distribution chain. Cops are already on the trail of the gang members.
He has also been accused of residing in India without a visa after initially entering the country in 2013 a professional footballer. He reportedly told police that he went into drugs to seek another source of livelihood after his football career hit the rocks.
Police said investigations revealed that Ikenna went to Mumbai every month to meet his source named Angel. He would then bring the contraband to Delhi where he supplies students as well as trusted customers in clubs and parties. His drug penalty in India is teams are probing other members of the racket.
Like in Saudi Arabia, drug offenders in India face the death penalty altnough first time offenders usually get lucky with softer sentences.
