The Federal Government has confirmed that over 600 inmates escaped from the Kuje Correctional Centre, following Tuesday evening’s attack by suspected terrorists.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Mr Shuaibu Belgore, disclosed this during a visit to the facility, on Wednesday.
Belgore said that over 300 of the inmates have been re-arrested, adding that more are on the way.
He explained that the facility houses 994 inmates, noting that the gunmen, which he suspected were Boko Haram terrorists, attacked the facility to rescue their co-conspirators.
The permanent secretary also revealed that one person died, while three others were injured during the attack.
A spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Umar Abubakar, had earlier confirmed the attack in a statement, stressing that normlacy had been restored.
