Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, has said that he is not aware of any Social Media regulation bill in the National Assembly or anywhere in Nigeria.
The minister made the claim in an interview with Tim Sebastain on German TV, DW.
He is now under fire on social media for denying knowledge of a controversial bill that is being sponsored by Senator Muhammad Sani Musa of the ruling All Progressives Congress, and which passed the first and second readings on November 5 and 20, 2019 respectively.
The bill is titled, “The Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulation Bill 2019, and is otherwise known as the Social Media Bill. If passed, it will give sweeping power to the government to clamp down on critics and also shut down the internet.
