R&B king, R Kelly has set the airwaves buzzing for two reasons with a new song that is already topping the charts.
First, the track is 19 minutes long! Second, the musician addressed some of the sex abuse allegations levelled against him.
The song titled, I Admit provides an insight into what the singer has been going through and how he has been coping with the allegations and industry decisions taken against him.
“I’m a broke ass legend.”, he says halfway into the song, “Spotify took me off they playlist.”
He sings:
“I’m not convicted, not arrested, but drag my name in the dirt.
All this work to be successful and you abandon me cause of what you heard.”
“Now the truth in this message is I’m a broke-ass legend
The only reason I stay on tour is ’cause I gotta pay my rent”
“I never thought it would come to this, to being the most disrespected artist
So I had to write a song about it
‘Cause they always take my words and twist it
Believe me, it’s hard to admit all this.”
He also admitted owing $20 million to the IRS and had to stay in the Homewood Suites in a south Chicago suburb after being removed from his home.
He admits to having 23 lawyers.
“Say I’m abusing these women…that’s some absurd s**t.” R. Kelly sings, stressing that women chase him, not the other way around. According to him, a father dropped a daughter off to his concert and encouraged the relationship.
A part of the song quots a Bible verse, “No weapon formed against me shall prosper”, saying the “anointing” of God is upon him but that he also doesn’t go to church.
“Where in the f**k is my money? Now here come this big ass conspiracy.” R. Kelly sings, suggesting he is missing royalties for music he wrote because of the sex abuse allegations.
He alao admits being naive and illiterate as a young boy when he signed away rights to his own music because he didn’t understand what he was signing. He also sings of firing the people responsible for not representing his best interests.
R Kelly also confessed that he was sexually molested at the age of 14.
He sings:
I admit a family member touched me
From a child to the age of 14
While I laid asleep, took my virginity
So scared to say something, so I just put the blame on me,” he sings.
“I admit I done made some mistakes and I have some imperfect ways,” sings the 51-year-old R&B superstar
He also sings:
How they gon’ say I don’t respect these women when all I’ve done is represent?
Take my career and turn it upside down ’cause you’re mad I’ve got some girlfriends
Hell with this record deal
It ain’t worth this shot for real
Ain’t seen my kids in years
They’re tryna lock me up like Bill.”
The Pied Piper also addresses his outspoken critics including Steve Harvey, John Legend, and Tom Joyner. “They’re doing good in their lives right now, why would they wanna tear down another brother?”
