Professor Folasade Ogunsola has been elected as the new acting Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos (UNILAG), after polling the highest number of votes in the election held by members of the University’s Senate on Monday.
Before her emergence, Ogunsola, a professor of medical microbiology, was the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development Services of the institution.
Ogunsola polled 135 votes out of the 167 casted, to defeat her only challenger, Professor Ben Ogbojafor, who secured 31 votes.
Both Ogunsola and Ogbojafor were nominated for the position by members of the institution’s Senate.
The Chairman of the Senate Emergency committee, Prof Chioma Agomo, announced the result to journalists after the election.
A total of 167 professors participated in the election.
President Muhammadu Buhari had last week directed the varsity’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Wale Babalakin, and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, to recuse themselves from official duties, pending the outcome of the Special Visitation Panel set up to look into the crises rocking the institution.
The president also asked varsity’s Senate to appoint an acting VC.
