The #EndSARS protests in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, assumed a dangerous dimension on Thursday took as two police officers were burnt to ashes while a motorcyclist was allegedly killed by the police.
Also, a police vehicle attached to the Gbagi police station and some other vans were also burnt.
It was gathered that crisis started when three police officers in a police vehicle were stopped and accused of hitting and killing an Okada rider on their way to Iwo Road roundabout. The development made the youths who had been protesting to pursue the police officers who were in the police vehicle.
The hoodlums then burnt two of the officers and their vehicle while the third one reportedly escaped.
It was learnt that men of the Nigerian Army tried to persuade the youths not to carry out more dastardly acts, but they didn’t heed the advise.
A military officer who tried to stop the youths from carrying outt the atatck, said:”The mob has killed two police officers today. In retaliation, the police killed one of them. It happened around Abayomi here.”
The arrival Governor Seyi Makinde calmed the frayed nerves as the youths tried to attack the Testing Ground Police Barracks.
As at 1.40 p.m, when Makinde moved round the area, the two police officers were seen burnt on the road.
Makinde pacified the surging crowd ,promising to take appropriate steps .
Makinde, who appealed to them not to destroy anybody’s property, assured the protesters that before the day ends,he would work out how to secure the release of those locked up by the police. He promised o address issues raised by the protesters.
He also assured them that he would meet with the Commissioner of Police, Nwachukwu Enwonwu on the need to take the appropriate actions.
“The government which you brought into power would do the right thing for you. Oyo State Government will do the right and appropriate things for you. Yes, there is trust deficit, but I want you to trust me. Whatever happens to you, it happens to me. I beg you,I don’t want it to escalate beyond this.
“Every life is important. Your life is important. Don’t waste anybody’s life.
“Don’t let hoodlums hijack this protest. Don’t destroy anybody’s property. Don’t destroy anything.
“Those that were locked up, before the end of today, I will ensure they are brought out, please!!!” Makinde said.
