The National Secretariat of the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRIAI) has directed all its members in teaching and specialist hospitals and federal medical centres across the country to embark on an indefinite strike from today (Thursday).
The directive was contained in a circular signed by its General Secretary, Mr M. O. Akinade on Wednesday.
The circular with reference number SSAUTHRIAI/GEN/1/57 said the strike was in compliance with the decision of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) to embark on an indefinite strike.
The directive warned that no member should refuse to participate in the strike action under any guise, adding that any act of sabotage or threat from the authorities should be reported to the national headquarters.
“On no account should any officer or member under any guise refuse to participate in the strike action and any act of sabotage or threats by any Management staff should be promptly reported to the National Headquarters of the union.
“It is emphasized that failure of any branch to fully participate in the strike will be visited with severe punishment in accordance with the constitution of the union. It will be in the overall interest of all members of the union to make the strike a huge success.” The directive read in part.
Members of JOHESU had issued a 14-day ultimatum to government to meet their demands or face an indefinite strike. The ultimatum lapsed on Wednesday.
