An unknown number of gunmen stormed the Garissa University College in Kenya setting off explosives and reportedly shooting people within premise at about 5:30am Thursday morning.
Up to 15 students have been reported killed while many have been taken to hospital. Some students were still being held hostage.
Police officers responded to the initial crisis and were joined by KDF officers. Neither have entered the building even as rescue operations get under way. A KDF officer was shot and injured in the initial stages of the siege and has since been rushed to hospital.
The attack on the institution comes in the wake of an intelligence report issued last week Wednesday warning of al Shabaab militia planning an attack on major institutions as a sign of retaliation.
