Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have reportedly killed no fewer than 25 persons in Kogi State.
The assailants unleashed terror on three communities in the Eastern Senatorial district of the state. The affected communities are Oganienugwu and Ikende in Dekina Local Government Area as well as Abejukolo in Omala Local Government Area.
The attacks which started on Tuesday and continued till Thursday have made residents to relocate from Obakume, Idirisu, and Oji Apata.
According to a witness, the assailants who were dressed in army uniform slaughtered their victims after tying them up and those who tried to escape allegedly received machete cuts.
The witness said residents were woken up by gunshots from the AK-47 rifles the assailants wielded, adding that they had visited mayhem on the villagers in their farms before returning in the wee hour of the morning while the villagers were asleep.
Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed as houses were razed and others demolished in the violent attacks.
Responding to the incident. the state’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Monday Bala, who confirmed the incident, said the command was yet to ascertain the actual number of casualties.
He said police officers and officials of the armed forces have been dispatched to the communities to curb further attacks.
