President Muhammadu Buhari has finally decided to visit five states that have experienced massive killings since the beginning of the year.
Most of the killings were carried out by Fulani herdsmen, Boko Haram insurgents, unknown militia gangs and cultists.
The states include Benue, Yobe, Taraba, Zamfara and Rivers.
A statement by the president’s adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina on Monday, said Buhari took the decision to visit having received and studied “comprehensive reports” he had requested security agencies to compile and supply.
“Having received and studied the Reports, the President has decided to undertake an on the spot assessment of the various occurrences and to meet and console the communities affected”, Adesina said.
Recall that the President has come under criticism for not visiting the states including Dapchi, where Boko Haram kidnapped 110 schoolgirls.
The President was greatly derided for choosing to attend a wedding ceremony between the chikdren of Governors Abdullahi Ganduje and Abiola Ajimobi, last Saturday in Kano when many were mourning the death and loss of loved ones in nearby states.
According to the statement, “from today, March 5, he will visit Taraba, and subsequently Benue, Yobe, Zamfara and Rivers States”.
It added: “President Buhari has been receiving daily briefings, and has been in constant touch with the Governors, and has been updated with situation reports.
“The President calls on all Nigerians especially those in the affected areas to cooperate fully with the Security Agencies to enable them curb the spate of crimes, bring those responsible to justice and prevent further occurrences.”
