A section of the palace of Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, in the Iga Iduganran area of Lagos Island has was gutted by fire on Tuesday.
Reports said the fire which started at about 1:30 p.m, emanated from an air condition in an apartment inside the palace, destroying furniture and other household items in the room.
Firefighters succeeded in putting out the fire.
The incident sparked off insinuations on social media that the fire might be punishment for how the monarch treated the Ooni of Ife, Ooni Enitan Ogunwusi, at a public event one week ago. Some said the Ooni should be happy with the fire.

But the Ooni’s palace has stated that the fire had nothing to do with Oba Akiolu’s relationship with the Ooni.
Premium Times quoted the spokesperson of the Ooni’s palace, Moses Olafare, as saying the the Ooni is unhappy with the fire incident.
“We are not happy over the fact that the palace of Lagos king got burnt, we can only sympathise with the palace on the development,” he said.
Olafare added: “People are entitled to their own views. But what people say doesn’t mean that is the position of the palace.”
“What happened is mere coincidence and should not be traced to the incident in Lagos, we send our sympathies,” he added.
