Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC Oyo South) has proposed the naming of one of the Senate committee rooms after late Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Olalekan Balogun, to immortalise his memory.
A statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday by the lawmaker’s Special Adviser on Media, Akeem Abas, said Alli’s motion of urgent national importance presented at plenary on Wednesday, urged the Senate to honour the late monarch.
He advocated the sending of high-powered delegation on a condolence visit to the governor, late monarch’s family, chiefs and the people of Ibadan as well as paying a visit to the incoming Olubadan, who incidentally was a member of House of Representatives.
His motion highlighted the exceptional contributions of the revered monarch, saying he excelled as a statesman, former Senator and custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition.
He said that late Oba Balogun’s wisdom, leadership and dedication to his people would be deeply missed, calling for unanimous support as a fitting tribute to his remarkable legacy.
The lawmaker urged the Senate to observe a minute silence to honour the memory of the late monarch, who is also a former Senator and elder statesman. A request granted and observed by the Senate.
The trio of Sen. Yunus Akintunde (APC Oyo Central), Sen. Abdulfatai Buhari(APC Oyo North) and Sen. Abba Moro (PDP- Benue South) supported the motion.
Recall that the late first-class monarch, who reigned as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan land for two years, passed away on Thursday, March 14.
