The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South West Zone D,  has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Aminu Mohammed, a student of Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, from detention.

The students, in a statement jointly signed by the Zonal Coordinator, NANS South West Zone D, Adegboye Emmanuel Olatunji, and NANS Chairman in Ogun State, Simeon Damilola Kehinde, on Thursday, threatened to block major roads across the South West states in protest if the first lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, fails to order the release of Mohammed.

NANS condemned the continued detention of the final year student, describing it as violation of his human rights.

They described the alleged brutality, harassment and humiliation of Mohammed by the police as an abuse of power.

“We condemn in totality the harassment and detention of Mohammed, this is nothing but abuse of human rights.

“We hereby call for the unconditional release of Mohammed within the next 24 hours failure to which the first lady will incur the wrath of Nigerian students from the South West region.

“We are prepared to mobilise the entire student community in the South West region for a massive protest if Mohammed is not released in the next 24 hours. This is uncivilized and not good for the growing democracy of Nigeria,” the statement said.

Mohammed, a 500-level student of Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, has been charged to court and remanded at Suleja Correctional centre, Niger State, for tweeting that the first lady was feeding fat on the poor people’s money.
