Chamois is a small village in the Aosta Valley region of north western Italy.
The municipality is Italy’s second highest city, but the first and only without cars.
Chamois is also the only Italian municipality not accessible by vehicle; a decision reached by a referendum held in 1955, which its inhabitants are very proud of.
A unique choice in Italy that ensures the small village is an oasis of serenity, nature, silence, peace and tranquillity, where time seems to have stopped.
With no traffic at Chamois, no cars or scooters, no noise and no smog, there’s just clean air, clear skies, forests as far as the eye can see, magnificent nature and a still uncontaminated and untouched mountainous landscape.
The village can be comfortably reached by the cable car departing from Buisson, another village in Aosta Valley.
Chamois consists of seven hamlets, small groups of traditional houses in wood and stone, connected by effortless roads or paths.
In summer, people can travel on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or backpacking. For the more athletic, by the steep mule track that climbs 700 metres into the forest or by pushing the pushchair for small children, who can run and play without any risk.
The population of Chamois as of 2023 is 108, consisting 58 males and 50 females.
