Osun police break up RevolutionNow protest in Osogbo, reportedly brutalise 70-year-old woman food seller, teargas protesters, journalists
The police in Osun State broke up the #RevolutionNow protest in Osogbo on Monday, brutalizing a 70 year old woman hawking fufu in the process.
Eyewitnesses said the woman, identified as Sariyu Akanmi, was passing through the protest area when police arrived and attacked her, hit her with the butt of the gun and even kicked her on the floor while trying to throw her into their waiting van. Her arrest was however prevented by people around.
Reports also said the police also brutalised and arrested about 10 of the protesters, and dired teargas at journalists at the scene.
The protesters were mainly students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree and other public tertiary institutions in the state. As part of their protests, they demanded the unconditional release of Omoyele Sowore, who was arrested by the DSS on Saturday in connection with the protest.
