The Federal Government has dropped the treason charges levelled against #RevolutionNow convener and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare
The decision to discontinue the Sowore’s trial was contained in a notice dated February 14, filed by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Prince Lateef Fagbemi at the Federal High Court, Abuja.
“By virtue of the power conferred on me under Section 174 (1) (c} of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, Section 107 (1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 and all other powers enabling me in that behalf, I Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN intend to discontinue charge No: FHC/ABJ/CR/235/2019,” the AGF wrote.
Recall that Sowore and Bakare were arraigned in 2019 before a Federal High Court in Abuja for ‘treasonable felony’ after staging protests in Abuja and Lagos, tagged ‘Revolution Now.’
Sowore was detained at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters for about 150 days before securing freedom after a legal battle. He
Subsequently, he was prohibited from travelling outside Nigeria.
On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, Amnesty International called on the Nigerian authorities to drop all the “bogus charges” against Sowore.
