Former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, who contested against Akpabio, was nominated by Elisha Abbo, representing Adamawa North Senatorial District, and his nomination was seconded by Jimoh Ibrahim, representing Ondo South.
Akpabio polled 63 votes to defeat Yari, who has 46 votes.
All the 109 senators were present and they all cast their votes in the election.
After the Clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal, called for nominations, and Abbo nominated Yari, who is representing Zamfara West, some senators protested that th former governor cannot stand for the position as a first-time senator.
