The Department of State Services (DSS) has said the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, is now in its custody.
The secret police, in a statement by its spokesperson, Dr Peter Afunanya, confirmed Emefiele’s arrest on Saturday hours after saying he was “currently” not in detention.
“The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is now in its custody for some investigative reasons,” he said.
Afunanya urged the public, particularly the media, to apply utmost caution in the reportage and narratives concerning the arrest of the suspended CBN Governor.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu had on Friday night suspended Emefiele from office.
The suspension of the CBN Governor, according to the president, was based on an ongoing investigation as well as planned reforms in the financial sector.
Emefiele was directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), Mr Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.
