The Jigawa House of Assembly has impeached the Speaker, Alhaji Isa Idris.
Idris was impeached by 20 out of 30 members of the House on Thursday morning.
The Assembly’s sitting on Wednesday was riotous as members broke the mace of the assembly into three piece as they argued over the amendment of the House Standing Rule (HSR).
Tension in the assembly had heightened in the past two months as agitation among members peaked over
There had been alleged plans by some members to return a former Speaker of the Assembly, Idris Garba to office.
Garba was impeached in January 2017 as the speaker of the assembly after he was accused of high-handedness and arrogating too much power to himself. The present Speaker, Idris, was elected in his stead.
There was tension at Tuesday’s sitting after some members raised observation over a plan to amend the HSR as contained in the order of the day, which stipulated that any principal officer of the assembly that was removed from his position through impeachment, would be barred by law from re-contesting for any office under the leadership of the assembly.
In anger, the members opposing the proposed amendment went after the mace while the sergeant at arm attempted to stop them and in the process, the mace got broken into three pieces.
Following the rowdy session, the speaker, Idris, adjourned the sitting of the assembly to next week, Thursday.
Some members however gathered today and impeached him. The lawmakers then returned Garba as the new Speaker.
