The Executive Secretary of Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA), Dr Sola Akande, has disclosed that about 800 street sweepers in the state would be registered into the health insurance scheme in April 2024.
Akande made this disclosure while featuring on a radio station in Ibadan.
“I want to celebrate especially, some people that we discountenance. Our aunties, our mothers, our sisters who sweep streets across Oyo State.
“A great job they are doing. I want to say to them that they are remembered, they are loved and Oyo State will be setting a pace.
“Oyo State Health Insurance will be bringing on board all street sweepers, about 800 of them into a state’s health insurance scheme. They are not going to pay nothing. I spoke with the Commissioner for Environment, he was excited. So, we are having this partnership within the next two weeks.
“All street sweepers in Oyo State will come on board. I wish we can put their family but let’s just start from somewhere. Each of the women will come on health insurance and from April, they will begin to have access to health insurance.
“We will put them in the nearest Primary Healthcare Center (PHC) to them. Of course, the fact that we are bringing them to PHC does not mean they won’t have level of care beyond that.
“It is going to be a major one. We are going to have with them some level of education and orientation to know that they have the hospital there for them to use,” he said.
