Youths in their hundreds, on Monday, hit the streets of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Monday, to protest the high prices of food and the state of the economy.
The protesters converged at Mokola area of the metropolis carrying placards with various inscriptions such as ‘End food hike and inflation,’ ‘The poor are starving,’ and ‘Tinubu, don’t forget your promises,’ among others.
They were also singing songs to show their grievances.
Armed policemen were also seen at the protest ground.
Speaking during the protest, a youth who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “The problem affects everyone. Every Nigerian should stand for their right and must collectively fight this high cost of living. We cannot afford three square meals.
“Sections 39 and 40 of the country’s constitution empower every Nigerian to organise peaceful assembly and to speak about the economic hardship. This protest is a continuous action, so expect protest from any angle. It is not about me alone but about Nigerians.
“We must collectively fight for this and make sure that things are brought back to normalcy.”
Another protester, who identified herself as Barakat, stressed that the hunger in the land is becoming unbearable.
“Everything is going out of hand. We can’t even complete two square meals. We voted Tinubu so that he can make corrections to Buhari’s wrong but the problem has gone out of hand now,” she added.
Recall that youths and women had earlier protested in Niger, Kano and Osun States to protest what they called the biting economic hardship and the rising cost of living in the country.
The protest started when a group of women blocked the Minna-Bida Road at the popular Kpakungu Roundabout to lament what they described as sufferings under President Bola Tinubu’s government.
They were later joined by men and youths who barricaded the road and halted vehicular traffic.
The economic situation in the country had become unbearable following the removal of the fuel subsidy by Tinubu on May 29, 2023.
