The President of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo, has said members of the union will not join the nationwide protest against economic hardship because the congress was not part of the plan from the onset.
Osifo stated this at a press briefing on Monday, adding that the union will rather engage the government further to find solutions to the hardship being faced by Nigerians than going to the streets.
Recall that the President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, had last week disclosed that the organised labour would be embarking on a two-day nationwide mass protest against the economic hardship in the country.
Ajaero maintained that the organised labour would not back down on its planned action despite warnings from the Department of State Services (DSS), Police and the Attorney General of the Federation.
However, Osifo explained that the TUC was originally not part of the plan, adding that the union would present a fresh 15-point way forward highlighted to the government rather than taking to the streets.
“There is no point saying we are opting out of a process we were not originally part of initially. We are going to present the way forward we have highlighted to the government, not through protest,” Osifo said.
